I’m interested in engineering, but not sure about the best major for me…
We are the only educational institution in Maine to offer 11 different ABET accredited majors. If you aren’t sure, you can start out undecided, then choose from bioengineering, chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, computer engineering, construction engineering technology, electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, engineering physics, mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, or surveying technology.

Earning a degree is a significant achievement and an important investment in your future. Since so much of your future success depends on your educational foundation, the quality of the education you receive makes a big difference. Graduating from an ABET-accredited program opens doors to careers around the world.
Once you’ve decided on a major, you can add a minor in Engineering Leadership and Management, Engineering Entrepreneurial, or Innovation Engineering, among many others.

UMaine Engineering faculties are among the best teachers on campus. Six engineering professors have won the Distinguished Maine Professor Award. It’s nice to know that professors, not graduate students, teach all our engineering courses. Engineering courses are relatively small (most have less than 30 students; few are over 50) and many have “hands-on” laboratories so students have an active role in learning.
First-year students are eligible for our mentoring program and study sessions led by upper-class students, which have proven to be a real advantage when it comes to getting good grades.
Academic success is also fostered outside the classroom with opportunities for co-op experience and research participation. The College of Engineering typically receives over $12,000,000 in research support, which provides opportunities for undergraduate students to work with faculty and graduate students on both basic and applied research. Students can work in the Advanced Manufacturing Center, the Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center, the Laboratory for Surface Science Technology, the Crosby Lab, or the Pulp and Paper Pilot Plant.

No, all you’ll have time to do is study! Just kidding, everyone knows that students need a balanced life. True, academics come first and UMaine offers a full-range of programs in the liberal arts that can enhance your engineering degree. In fact, you can earn both engineering and liberal arts degrees in our new five year program. UMaine also offers one of the oldest honors programs in the nation for students looking for an extra challenge in our four year programs. We highly recommend it!

Cheer on the Black Bears! For fun, UMaine offers NCAA Division I men’s and women’s athletics and a wide range of intramural sports. Our spectacular new 87,000 sq. ft. Recreation Center: multiple basketball, volleyball and racquetball courts, fitness center, leisure pool with spa, and indoor track gives you plenty of exercise and relaxation activities.
The Collins Center for the Arts offers a wide range of cultural events every year. Past performers include Dave Matthews, Greg Allman, moe, Alan Thicke, comedian Kevin James, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Isaac Stern and Yo-Yo Ma, Jerry Seinfeld, Dennis Miller,The Peking Acrobats, and many more. Students receive discounted tickets to the shows.
Engineering students can also participate in a variety of engineering competitions, including regional winning teams, including: concrete canoe team , clean snowmobile team, steel bridge building and the chemical car team. Besides being fun, these activities are great for building teamwork skills.
Nationally, campus safety has become a big concern, how does the UMaine campus compare…
As you might expect given its rural setting, the UMaine campus has a low crime rate (for statistics on campus crime, see http://www.umaine.edu/security). Orono has the 85th lowest violent crime rate of 115 Maine towns according to the Maine Department of Public Safety. Recently, nearby Bangor was rated one of the top ten communities in the U.S. Maine has been named the best state in the nation to raise children by the Children’s Rights Council based in Washington DC. Maine ranks 48th out of the 50 states in violent crimes per 100,000 residents.
Who will I be joining at UMaine…
We expect the incoming class to number about 240 with an average SAT of 1214. (Nationally, only 20% of US students scored 1200 or better on the SAT test.) Over 70% of our students graduated in the top 20% of their high school class.
Where will I be when I graduate from UMaine Engineering…
When you graduate from UMaine Engineering, you will have received a high quality education and be very well-prepared to face the challenges of engineering in the 21st Century. Nationally, 74% of engineering graduates from accredited programs pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination, the first step in becoming a licensed professional engineer. Graduates of Maine’s College of Engineering have a passing rate of over 85%.
Ninety-seven percent of graduates responding to our job survey held engineering positions with salaries close to or above the national average. Maine companies employed 62 percent, while out-of-state employers include Compaq (software engineer), Rockwell Automation (sales engineer), Dupont (process engineer), Teradyne Connection Systems (product line engineer), General Motors (engineer), Raytheon (design engineer), IBM (programming engineer), Kiewit Construction (site engineer), Disney World (systems control engineer), ZF Lemforder (manufacturing engineer) and Westvaco (process engineer).

Princeton Review Again Cites UMaine Among Nation’s Top Colleges
The University of Maine is one of the 379 higher education institutions nationwide — and the only public university in Maine — to be profiled in the 2015 Princeton Review guide to best colleges. The top ranking follows UMaine’s inclusion earlier this year in the “Fiske Guide to Colleges 2015″ and Princeton Review’s “Guide to 332 Green Colleges: 2014 Edition.”
UMaine’s appearance in “The Best 379 Colleges: 2015 Edition” marks the ninth consecutive year of recognition by Princeton Review, as well as Fiske. This is the fifth consecutive year that UMaine has been named a green college by Princeton Review for exemplary commitment to sustainability in academics, campus infrastructure and programming, with a score of 98 out of 100.
