Composites World Features UMaine’s new GEM Building
Composites World features the groundbreaking of the University of Maine’s Green Engineering and Materials (GEM) building, a state-of-the-art facility scheduled for completion in 2026. The $82 million project will support interdisciplinary research, innovation, and workforce development in advanced manufacturing, helping students and faculty address economic and societal challenges. A collaboration between UMaine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center, the Maine College of Engineering and Computing, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, GEM is designed to lead advancements in additive manufacturing and sustainability. The facility will include interactive learning spaces like the mini-GEM and two large bays for research in large-scale, renewable-material production. Supported by multiple funding sources, GEM underscores UMaine’s role as a driver of economic growth and global innovation.
