The University of Maine announced the approval of a new Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Business, a first-of-its-kind program within the University of Maine System (UMS). This interdisciplinary major will equip students with the technical expertise and business acumen needed to thrive in today’s technology-driven industries.

Students will primarily take courses through UMaine’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Maine College of Engineering and Computing (MCEC), and Maine Business School, with additional opportunities to access aligned courses across UMS universities, including University of Maine at Augusta,University of Maine Machias, University of Maine Farmington, University of Maine Presque Isle, and University of Southern Maine Maine .

“The Computer Science and Business major brings together the core skills of the two fields to prepare students to develop new technology for business applications, manage computing teams, and launch entrepreneurial endeavors,” said Penny Rheingans, director of the UMaine School of Computing and Information Science.

This program aligns with MCEC’s mission to meet growing industry demands by doubling engineering and computing degrees in Maine, as supported by the UMS TRANSFORMS initiative and historic investments from the Harold Alfond Foundation. In the 2022–23 academic year, UMS conferred over 1,200 degrees in engineering and computing, contributing to a stronger workforce for Maine and beyond.
